Denver-based urban sketcher Paul Heaston takes a sketchbook and pen with him wherever he goes, capturing the world around him in his distinct sketchy style. Each inked line drawing gives a glimpse into the life of this artist, husband, and dad, and how he balances family commitments with his love of art.

Heaston never misses a chance to fit in some drawing time each day. “I made a lot of what I call domestic sketches—scenes of my house, my living room, my kitchen.” he says. “When my daughter Junie was younger I used to drive my wife to work and Junie would fall asleep in the car on the way home. I used to pull over and draw from my car. It was a little window of time that I would take advantage of.”

Heaston’s sketchbooks are bursting with an abundance of subjects, but perhaps his most impressive works are his drawings within rooms. Often rendered with a fountain pen and carbon ink, each piece is sketched with perfect perspective, revealing the scene from the artist’s point of view. Heaston even draws his own arms, hands, and sketchbook within each setting, highlighting his position within the room. From cafes to airport terminals, each space is illustrated with incredible detail. In one piece, Heaston has even captured the cramped chaos of airplane seating, complete with his sketchbook laid out on the fold-out tray.
